An Act to amend the Social Security Act 1964

1 Short Title
  • This Act may be cited as the Social Security Amendment Act 1973, and shall be read together with and deemed part of the Social Security Act 1964 (hereinafter referred to as the principal Act).

Part 1
Monetary benefits

  • (1) This subsection inserted the definition of the term Appeal Authority or Authority in s 3(1) of the principal Act.

    (2) [Repealed]

    (3) Subsection (1) of this section shall come into force on a date to be fixed by the Governor-General by Order in Council.

    Subsection (2) was repealed, as from 11 October 1978, by section 2(3)(a) Social Security Amendment Act 1978 (1978 No 58).

    Section 3 was repealed, as from 23 June 1987, by section 3(3)(a) Social Security Amendment Act 1987 (1987 No 106).

  • (1) This subsection inserted a heading and ss 12A to 12R in the principal Act.

    (2) [Repealed]

    (3) This section shall come into force on a date to be fixed by the Governor-General by Order in Council.

    Subsection (2) was repealed, as from 1 February 1992, by section 159(2) Legal Services Act 1991 (1991 No 71).

5 Repealing certain provisions
  • (1) The principal Act is hereby further amended by repealing sections 22 and 23, subsections (2) and (3) of section 24, and sections 25 and 26.

    (2) The Domestic Proceedings Act 1968 is hereby consequentially amended by repealing so much of Schedule 1 as relates to section 25 of the principal Act.

  • (1) This subsection inserted a heading and ss 27A to 27H in the principal Act.

    (2) Notwithstanding anything in this section, if any person was, immediately before the commencement of this section, in receipt of a benefit under section 22 or section 23 or section 61 of the principal Act, the Director-General may, in the Director-General's discretion, continue to pay the benefit as if this section and section 5 of this Act had not been enacted.

    In subsection (2) the reference to the Director-General was substituted, as from 23 June 1987, for a reference to the Commission by section 2(3)(b) Social Security Amendment Act 1987 (1987 No 106), and the reference to in the Director General's discretion was substituted, as from 23 June 1987, for a reference to in its discretion by section 2(3)(d) of that Act.

19 Authority to increase rates of benefits
  • (1) Notwithstanding anything to the contrary in the principal Act, the Commission may, in accordance with any general or special instructions given the Minister, in respect of the period commencing on the 1st day of December 1972 and ending with the 31st day of December 1972, increase the rate of any benefit under the principal Act by an amount not exceeding the rate of that benefit payable in respect of any one week in that period.

    (2) This section shall be deemed to have come into force on the 1st day of December 1972.
