An Act to amend the Local Government Act 1974

BE IT ENACTED by the General Assembly of New Zealand in Parliament assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:

1 Short Title and commencement
  • (1) This Act may be cited as the Local Government Amendment Act 1980, and shall be read together with and deemed part of the Local Government Act 1974 (hereinafter referred to as the principal Act).

    (2) Sections 51 and 54 of this Act shall come into force on the day on which this Act receives the Governor-General's assent.

    (3) Section 58 of this Act shall be deemed to have come into force on the 1st day of April 1980.

    (4) Except as provided in subsections (2) and (3) of this section, this Act shall come into force on the 28th day after the day on which it receives the Governor-General's assent.

Amendments of principal Act

2 Interpretation
  • (1) [Repealed]

    (2) Every reference in the principal Act or in any other enactment to the principal officer of a regional council, united council, or territorial authority shall be read as a reference to the principal administrative officer of that council or authority.

    Subsection (1) was repealed, as from 1 November 1989, by section 2(19)(c) Local Government Amendment Act (No 2) 1989 (1989 No 29).

  • (1) This subsection substituted the definition of local authority in section 2(1) of the Harbours Act 1950.

    (3) The Local Government Amendment Act (No 3) 1977 is hereby amended by consequentially repealing so much of Part 2 of Schedule 3 as relates to the Harbours Act 1950.
