The Parliament of New Zealand enacts as follows:
This Act is the Customs and Excise (Social Assistance) Amendment Act 2008.
This Act comes into force on the day after the date on which it receives the Royal assent.
This Act amends the Customs and Excise Act 1996.
The purpose of this Act is to amend the principal Act so that the purposes for which it facilitates the exchange of information between the Customs and the department for the time being responsible for the administration of the Social Security Act 1964 include enabling the recovery of any debt due to the Crown in respect of any benefit.
(1) The heading to section 280 is amended by inserting “and benefit debt recovery” after “benefit”.

(2) Section 280 is amended by repealing subsection (2) and substituting the following subsection:
“(2) The purpose of this section is to facilitate the exchange of information between the Customs and the department for the time being responsible for the administration of the Social Security Act 1964 for all or any of the following purposes:“(a) to verify the entitlement or eligibility of any person to or for any benefit:“(b) to verify the amount of any benefit to which a person is or was entitled or for which a person is or was eligible:“(c) to enable the recovery of any debt due to the Crown in respect of any benefit.”
“(2) The purpose of this section is to facilitate the exchange of information between the Customs and the department for the time being responsible for the administration of the Social Security Act 1964 for all or any of the following purposes:
“(a) to verify the entitlement or eligibility of any person to or for any benefit:
“(b) to verify the amount of any benefit to which a person is or was entitled or for which a person is or was eligible:
“(c) to enable the recovery of any debt due to the Crown in respect of any benefit.”
