Coinage (Yellow-eyed Penguin Dollar) Regulations 1988

2 Yellow-eyed Penguin Dollar
  • (1) Notwithstanding anything in regulation 2(a) of the Coinage Regulations 1967, the design for the one-dollar coin to be known as the 1988 Yellow-eyed Penguin Dollar, to be made and issued pursuant to section 10(1) of the Decimal Currency Act 1964, shall be as follows:

    • (a) for the obverse impression, the effigy of Her Majesty the Queen in profile wearing a diadem, with the inscription ELIZABETH II NEW ZEALAND around the periphery of the coin and the date 1988 below the effigy:

    • (b) for the reverse impression, 2 yellow-eyed penguins (Megadyptes Antipodes), one in the foreground facing left and standing amongst marram grass, and one in the background facing right, and with a typical New Zealand shoreline in the background. The words ONE DOLLAR and YELLOW-EYED PENGUIN shall appear around the periphery of the coin, the words ONE DOLLAR being above the larger penguin, and the words YELLOW-EYED PENGUIN being below the larger penguin.

    (2) Except as provided in subclause (1), all the provisions of the Coinage Regulations 1967 relating to the one-dollar coin shall apply to the coin referred to in that subclause.
