Explanatory note
This note is not part of the order, but is intended to indicate its general effect.
This order brings into force, on 1 January 1999, the Adoption (Intercountry) Act 1997.
The Adoption (Intercountry) Act 1997 provides for the implementation in New Zealand of the Convention on Protection of Children and Co-operation in Respect of Intercountry Adoption. It also provides for the approval of non-Government organisations as accredited bodies to whom functions may be delegated under the Convention.
New Zealand acceded to the Convention on 18 September 1998. The Convention will enter into force for New Zealand on 1 January 1999. The Adoption (Intercountry) Act 1997 is therefore brought into force on the same date.
