Land Transport (Commencement of Provisions) Order 1999


This order is administered in the Ministry of Transport.

PURSUANT to section 1(2) of the Land Transport Act 1998, His Excellency the Governor-General, acting by and with the advice and consent of the Executive Council, makes the following order.

1 Title and commencement
  • (1) This order may be cited as the Land Transport (Commencement of Provisions) Order 1999.

    (2) This order comes into force on the 28th day after the date of its notification in the Gazette.

2 Commencement of certain provisions of Land Transport Act 1998

Explanatory note

This note is not part of the order, but is intended to indicate its general effect.

This order, which comes into force 28 days after notification in the Gazette, brings certain provisions of the Land Transport Act 1998 into force on 3 May 1999. They are—

  • section 5(4), which requires drivers to produce their licences without delay when required to do so by an enforcement officer, and section 31(1)(c), which makes a failure to do so an offence:

  • section 23, which provides for the new system of 10-year driver licences:

  • section 24, which provides for the issue of temporary driver licences:

  • section 25, which prescribes a minimum age of 15 for the issue or holding of a driver licence:

  • section 28, which requires a driver licence to bear a photograph of the driver:

  • section 95, which provides for a mandatory 28-day suspension of a driver licence in certain circumstances:

  • subsections (1), (2), (3), and (5) of section 96, which provides for a mandatory 28-day seizure and impounding of motor vehicles in certain circumstances:

  • section 199, which provides for the continued operation of the present national register of driver licences.
