This notice is administered by the Ministry of Health.


Pursuant to section 94 of the Health Act 1956, the Minister of Health gives the following notice.

Notice

1 Title
  • This notice is the Health (Quarantine Inspection Places) Notice 2005.

2 Commencement
  • This notice comes into force on the day after the date of its notification in the Gazette.

3 Interpretation
  • In this notice, a reference to—

    • (a) a bearing is a reference to a true bearing:

    • (b) a mile is a reference to a nautical mile.

4 Places of inspection
  • For the purposes of the Health Act 1956, the harbour areas described in the Schedule are declared to be places of inspection to which ships liable to quarantine must be taken while awaiting inspection by the Medical Officer of Health or Health Protection Officer.

5 Revocation
  • The Quarantine Inspection Places Notice 1981 (SR 1981/346) is revoked.

Auckland, Waitemata Harbour

In the navigable areas contained between a line drawn from the light on Orakei Wharf (flashing red every 6 seconds), 355° to North Head and a line drawn 035° from the three fixed lights (Or.G.G.) on the head of Wynyard Wharf to the light known as the Bayswater light beacon (flashing red every 3 seconds).

Auckland Harbour, Motuihe Channel

Within the area bounded by straight lines from the west point of Browns Island 008° to the shore of Rangitoto Island; then 083° to Emu Point, Motutapu Island; then 139° to the shore of Motuihe Island; then 232° to Musick Point; then to the south point of Browns Island; then by high water mark the shortest distance to the point of commencement.

Bluff Harbour

In the open roadstead within the navigable area enclosed by a circle having a radius of 3 miles from the flagstaff on Stirling Point, or in any other position indicated by the Southland Harbour authorities on any occasion having regard to weather conditions.

Gisborne Harbour

In a position 2 miles north of Young Nicks Head.

Greymouth Harbour

In the open roadstead within the navigable area enclosed in a circle of 2 miles radius from the signal staff, or in any other position within that area indicated by the Greymouth Harbour authorities on any occasion having regard to weather conditions.

Lyttelton Harbour

Within the navigable area of Lyttelton Harbour northward of Camp Bay with the anchorage lighted beacons in transit 195.50°. Vessels may anchor to the westward of this bearing but must not proceed westward of a line bearing 345° from the rear anchorage beacon.

Napier Harbour

In a position on the southern heads that is 2.45 miles east of the South Pania buoy.

Nelson Harbour

In a position with Boulder Bank light tower bearing 124° 0.65 miles.

Oamaru Harbour

In a position 2 miles distant from South Head light structure indicated by the intersection of South Head light structure 253° and the head of the Breakwater 263°.

Opua, Bay of Islands Harbour

In the navigable area off Russell, Bay of Islands, lying between Tapeka Point 090° and the southern extremity of Kororareka Point 090° and eastward of the dredged channel leading beacons.

Otago Harbour

In a position with Taiaroa Head lighthouse bearing 160° 3.2 miles or in any other position indicated by the Otago Harbour authorities on any occasion having regard to weather conditions.

Picton Harbour

Within the navigable area to the westward of Mabel Island enclosed between the foreshore and a line from Kaipupu Point 047°, to the western extremity of Mabel Island, then 349° to Wedge Point.

Port Taranaki

In the open roadstead within the navigable area enclosed within the arc of a circle having a radius of 2 miles from the light tower on Mikotahi, or in any other position indicated by the Taranaki Harbour authorities on any occasion having regard to weather conditions.

Taharoa Harbour

At the ironsand mooring buoy in position latitude 38°10.61′S longitude 174°40.24′E.

Tauranga Harbour

In a position 075° 3.25 miles from the Mount Maunganui main light (flashing every 15 seconds), that is in a position 37°36.8′S, 176°14.3′E.

Timaru Harbour

In a position with the Timaru Harbour Eastern Extension Light (flashing red every 5 seconds) bearing 300° 2.4 miles or in any other position indicated by the Timaru Harbour authorities on any occasion having regard to weather conditions.

Wanganui Harbour

In the open roadstead at a position with the signal station 031° in 18.3 metres of water at M.L.W.S., or any other position within a radius of 3 miles of the flagstaff indicated by the Wanganui Harbour authorities on any occasion having regard to weather conditions.

Waverley Harbour

In a position in latitude 39°51.04′S longitude 174°35.88′E.

Wellington Harbour

That area of the harbour contained within a circle of radius 0.2 miles having as its centre a point bearing 347° 0.56 miles from Point Jerningham Lighthouse or any other position within Wellington Harbour indicated by the Wellington Harbour authorities on any occasion having regard to weather conditions.

Westport Harbour

In the open roadstead within the navigable area enclosed in a circle having a radius of 2 miles from the signal station, or any other position within that area indicated by the Westport Harbour authorities on any occasion having regard to weather conditions.

Whangarei Harbour

In the open roadstead within the navigable area enclosed by a circle having a radius of 3.1 miles centred on Frenchman Island, or in any other position indicated by the Whangarei Harbour authorities on any occasion having regard to weather conditions.

This note is not part of the notice, but is intended to indicate its general effect.

This notice, which comes into force on the day after its notification in the Gazette, specifies the areas to which ships liable for quarantine must be taken while awaiting inspection. It replaces the Quarantine Inspection Places Notice 1981 and makes substantive changes to the descriptions of the areas in the harbours of Gisborne, Napier, Otago, Timaru, and Wanganui.
