Pursuant to section 347 of the Education Act 1989, His Excellency the Governor-General, acting on the advice and with the consent of the Executive Council, makes the following regulations.
These regulations are the Education (Statistics New Zealand Authorised to Use National Student Numbers) Regulations 2008.
These regulations come into force on the 28th day after the date of their notification in the Gazette.
Statistics New Zealand is identified as an authorised user for the purposes of Part 30 of the Education Act 1989.

This note is not part of the regulations, but is intended to indicate their general effect.
These regulations, which come into force 28 days after notification in the Gazette, identify Statistics New Zealand as an authorised user of national student numbers for the purposes of Part 30 of the Education Act 1989.
National student numbers are numbers assigned to students enrolled with education providers (and to certain students exempted from enrolment with education providers) by the Secretary for Education under the authority of section 343 of that Act.
Once Statistics New Zealand has been identified as an authorised user, the Secretary can—
authorise (or require) Statistics New Zealand to use national student numbers for statistical purposes; and
make the authorisation or requirement subject to conditions.
