Explanatory note

This note is not part of the regulations, but is intended to indicate their general effect.

These regulations, which come into force on 1 August 2008, set out certain practice rules of the New Zealand Law Society that are enacted as regulations (under section 108 of the Lawyers and Conveyancers Act 2006 (the Act)) to ensure that they are binding on all persons.

The regulations set out the rules relating to—

  • the application for, and issue of, practising certificates:

  • the maintenance and content of, and access to, the register of lawyers:

  • criteria for eligibility to practise on own account:

  • a definition of direct supervision, as required by section 6 of the Act:

  • the amendment and replacement of practice rules, as required by section 94(r) of the Act:

  • transitional provisions.
