Pursuant to section 2 of the Tariff (AANZFTA) Amendment Act 2009, His Excellency the Governor-General, acting on the advice and with the consent of the Executive Council, makes the following order.

Explanatory note

This note is not part of the order, but is intended to indicate its general effect.

This order brings into force, on 1 January 2010, the Tariff (AANZFTA) Amendment Act 2009.

The Tariff (AANZFTA) Amendment Act 2009 amends the Tariff Act 1988 to implement a free trade agreement, namely the ASEAN–Australia–New Zealand Free Trade Area agreement (the AANZFTA). The amendments enable—

  • the application of preferential tariff rates under the AANZFTA; and

  • transitional safeguard measures to be applied in appropriate circumstances on imports originating from AANZFTA party countries.
