Explanatory note
This note is not part of the order, but is intended to indicate its general effect.
This order, which comes into force (retroactively) on 1 March 2011 and expires at the close of 30 November 2011, provides an exemption from sections 99AA and 99AB of the Social Security Act 1964 in respect of people residing in a specified area. Those sections provide for the expiry of the unemployment benefit and require application for a re-grant of that benefit.
The specified area is the districts of the territorial authorities in the Canterbury region affected directly or indirectly by the Canterbury earthquake of 4 September 2010 or any of its aftershocks: Christchurch City, and the districts of Ashburton, Hurunui, Selwyn, and Waimakariri.
The order is to the same effect as the Canterbury Earthquake (Social Security Act) Order 2010, which expired at the close of 28 February 2011.
The order is made under the Canterbury Earthquake Response and Recovery Act 2010, and its effect is temporary.
