New Zealand Police Meritorious Service Medal Regulations 2013

Pursuant to the Royal Warrant (SR 2013/430) dated 15 October 2013, His Excellency the Governor-General of New Zealand, under authority delegated by The Queen and on the advice of the Prime Minister, makes the following regulations.

Regulations

1 Title
  • These regulations are the New Zealand Police Meritorious Service Medal Regulations 2013.

2 Commencement
  • These regulations come into force on the day after the date of their notification in the Gazette.

3 Interpretation
  • In these regulations, unless the context otherwise requires,—

    bar means the bar to the medal

    Commissioner of Police means the Commissioner of Police holding office under section 12 of the Policing Act 2008

    medal means The New Zealand Police Meritorious Service Medal

    meritorious service has the meaning given by regulation 4(2)

    Police employee has the same meaning as in section 4 of the Policing Act 2008

    service includes—

    • (a) an act:

    • (b) a series of acts or a course of conduct over time:

    • (c) acts and conduct in different roles or tasks.

4 Eligibility for medal
  • (1) A person is eligible for the medal if the person performs meritorious service for New Zealand or the New Zealand Police while he or she is a Police employee.

    (2) In these regulations, unless the context otherwise requires, meritorious service means service by a Police employee that, in the opinion of the Commissioner of Police, is outstanding and worthy of recognition because the service—

    • (a) demonstrates innovation:

    • (b) is exemplary or a model for Police employees:

    • (c) brings significant benefit or prestige to New Zealand or the New Zealand Police:

    • (d) demonstrates the application of skills or performance far beyond that expected, given the employee's rank, qualifications, or experience.

5 Eligibility for bar
  • A person who has received the medal and who performs further meritorious service while he or she is a Police employee is eligible for a silver bar to be worn on the ribbon of the medal.

Explanatory note

This note is not part of the regulations, but is intended to indicate their general effect.

These regulations, which come into force on the day after the date of their notification in the Gazette, are made under a Royal Warrant dated 15 October 2013 (SR 2013/430). The regulations set out the criteria for the conferral of The New Zealand Police Meritorious Service Medal (the medal) and the bar to the medal.

The Minister of Police may, under the Royal Warrant, confer the medal on any person who performs meritorious service for New Zealand or the New Zealand Police while he or she is a Police employee.
