Fisheries (Notification of Waitarakao Mātaitai Reserve and Tangata Tiaki/Kaitiaki) Notice 2014

Pursuant to regulation 22 of the Fisheries (South Island Customary Fishing) Regulations 1999, the Director-General of the Ministry for Primary Industries gives the following notice.

Notice

1 Title
  • This notice is the Fisheries (Notification of Waitarakao Mātaitai Reserve and Tangata Tiaki/Kaitiaki) Notice 2014.

2 Commencement
  • This notice comes into force on the 28th day after the date of its notification in the Gazette (the commencement date).

3 Notification of Waitarakao Mātaitai Reserve
  • (1) A mātaitai reserve (to be known as the Waitarakao Mātaitai Reserve) has been declared under regulation 20 of the Fisheries (South Island Customary Fishing) Regulations 1999 over the following area:

    • (a) Washdyke Lagoon:

    • (b) all streams, tributaries, and canals that flow into Washdyke Lagoon that are east of the railway line and south of the private road off Meadows Road:

    • (c) the canal that enters the northern edge of Washdyke Lagoon running northeast to a lagoon located just south of Beach Road.

    (2) The declaration of the reserve takes effect on the commencement date.

4 Notification of appointment of Tangata Tiaki/Kaitiaki
  • (1) The Minister for Primary Industries has appointed the following Tangata Tiaki/Kaitiaki for the Waitarakao Mātaitai Reserve, each for a term of 5 years:

    • (l) Graham Waaka:

    • (m) Richard Hopkinson:

    • (n) Mokai Reihana:

    • (o) Rangi Timothy:

    • (p) Sula Timothy:

    • (q) Christine Todd.

    (2) The appointment of the Tangata Tiaki/Kaitiaki takes effect on the commencement date.

Explanatory note

This note is not part of the notice, but is intended to indicate its general effect.

This notice, which comes into force on the 28th day after the date of its notification in the Gazette, is made under the Fisheries (South Island Customary Fishing) Regulations 1999 (the regulations). This notice states that a mātaitai reserve has been declared under regulation 20 of the regulations and describes the boundaries of the reserve, which is located in the Washdyke Lagoon and adjoining waterways. This notice also names the Tangata Tiaki/Kaitiaki that have been appointed for the reserve.For further explanation of the general effect of the declaration of a mātaitai reserve, refer to the Fisheries (Declaration of Waitarakao Mātaitai Reserve) Notice 2014.
