Fisheries (Notification of Tāngata Tiaki/Kaitiaki for Area/Rohe Moana of Te Rūnanga o Awarua) Notice 2015

Pursuant to regulation 9 of the Fisheries (South Island Customary Fishing) Regulations 1999, the Minister for Primary Industries gives the following notice.

1 Title

This notice is the Fisheries (Notification of Tāngata Tiaki/Kaitiaki for Area/Rohe Moana of Te Rūnanga o Awarua) Notice 2015.

2 Commencement

This notice comes into force on the day after the date of its notification in the Gazette.

3 Revocation of this notice

This notice is revoked on 27 May 2020.

4 Customary food gathering area/rohe moana

This notice applies to the customary food gathering area/rohe moana defined by clause 2(c) of the Fisheries (South Island Customary Fishing) Notice (No. 42) 2003 (Gazette 2003, p 2883), which is an area around Ruapuke Island, in the Foveaux Strait.

5 Reappointments

(1)

The Minister for Primary Industries has appointed Ricky James Topi and Christine Mary Young for further terms as Tāngata Tiaki/Kaitiaki of the area/rohe moana.

(2)

The appointments—

(a)

took effect on 27 May 2015; and

(b)

expire at the end of 26 May 2020.

Explanatory note

This note is not part of the notice, but is intended to indicate its general effect.

This notice is made under the Fisheries (South Island Customary Fishing) Regulations 1999 (the regulations). It comes into force on the day after the date of its notification in the Gazette and revokes itself on 27 May 2020.

This notice relates to a customary food gathering area/rohe moana of the tangata whenua represented by Te Rūnanga o Awarua. The area is located around Ruapuke Island, in the Foveaux Strait.

Notice is given of the reappointment of 2 Tāngata Tiaki/Kaitiaki for the customary food gathering area/rohe moana. The Minister reappointed the Tāngata Tiaki/Kaitiaki under regulation 9(5) of the regulations at the request of Te Rūnanga o Awarua.

A Tangata Tiaki/Kaitiaki for a customary food gathering area/rohe moana may authorise any individual to take fish, aquatic life, or seaweed for customary food gathering purposes from within the area/rohe moana.
