Fisheries (Notification of Tāngata Tiaki/Kaitiaki for Area/Rohe Moana of Korako Karetai Trust) Notice 2015

Pursuant to regulations 9 and 10 of the Fisheries (South Island Customary Fishing) Regulations 1999, the Minister for Primary Industries gives the following notice.

1 Title

This notice is the Fisheries (Notification of Tāngata Tiaki/Kaitiaki for Area/Rohe Moana of Korako Karetai Trust) Notice 2015.

2 Commencement

This notice comes into force on the day after the date of its notification in the Gazette.

3 Revocation of this notice

This notice is revoked on 23 December 2020.

4 Customary food gathering area/rohe moana

This notice applies to the customary food gathering area/rohe moana defined by clause 2(c) of the Fisheries (South Island Customary Fishing) Notice (No. 11) 2010 (Gazette 2010, p 4094), which is an area from Heyward Point to Black Head.

5 Reappointments

(1)

The Minister for Primary Industries has appointed the following people for a further term as Tāngata Tiaki/Kaitiaki for the area/rohe moana:

(a)

Tawhiri George Karetai:

(b)

Paul Kemp.

(2)

The appointments– –

(a)

take effect on 23 December 2015; and

(b)

expire at the close of 22 December 2020.

6 Appointment cancelled

(1)

The Minister for Primary Industries has cancelled the appointment of Robert Leggat (Paul) Karaitiana as a Tangata Tiaki/Kaitiaki for the area/rohe moana.

(2)

The cancellation took effect at the close of 20 October 2015.

7 New appointment

(1)

The Minister for Primary Industries has appointed Oliver Andrew Dawson as a Tangata Tiaki/Kaitiaki for the area/rohe moana.

(2)

The appointment—

(a)

took effect on 21 October 2015; and

(b)

expires at the close of 20 October 2020.

Explanatory note

This note is not part of the notice, but is intended to indicate its general effect.

This notice is made under the Fisheries (South Island Customary Fishing) Regulations 1999. It comes into force on the day after the date of its notification in the Gazette and revokes itself on 23 December 2020, being the day after the expiry of the reappointments in clause 5.

The Tāngata Tiaki/Kaitiaki for a customary food gathering area/rohe moana may authorise any individual to take fish, aquatic life, or seaweed for customary food gathering purposes from within the area/rohe moana.

This notice relates to a customary food gathering area/rohe moana of the tangata whenua represented by the Korako Karetai Trust. The area/rohe moana is an area from Heyward Point to Black Head in Otago.

Notice is given of—

  • the reappointment of 2 Tāngata Tiaki/Kaitiaki whose current terms will expire at the close of 22 December 2015:

  • the cancellation of the appointment of a Tangata Tiaki/Kaitiaki who has resigned:

  • the appointment of a replacement Tangata Tiaki/Kaitiaki.

The Minister for Primary Industries made the reappointments, cancellation, and appointment at the request of the Korako Karetai Trust.
