Explanatory note

This note is not part of the regulations, but is intended to indicate their general effect.

These regulations, which come into force on 28 March 2016, amend the Student Allowances Regulations 1998.

The amendments increase the rates of basic grants payable to students who have 1 or more supported children to align with the increases on 1 April 2016 to the rates of benefits under the Social Security Amendment Act (No 2) 2015.

The rates are adjusted to effect an increase, after deduction of tax, of—

  • $25 per week for single students:

  • $25 per week for married or partnered students if the student’s spouse or partner does not receive, or is not eligible to receive, the basic grant:

  • $12.50 per week for married or partnered students if the student’s spouse or partner receives the basic grant.

Issued under the authority of the Legislation Act 2012.

Date of notification in Gazette: 10 March 2016.

These regulations are administered by the Ministry of Social Development.
