Fisheries (Notification of Tangata Tiaki/Kaitiaki for Mātaitai Reserve at Port Levy (Potiriwi)/Koukourarata) Notice 2016

Pursuant to regulation 22 of the Fisheries (South Island Customary Fishing) Regulations 1999, the Minister for Primary Industries gives the following notice.

Notice

1 Title

This notice is the Fisheries (Notification of Tangata Tiaki/Kaitiaki for Mātaitai Reserve at Port Levy (Potiriwi)/Koukourarata) Notice 2016.

2 Commencement

This notice comes into force on the day after the date of its notification in the Gazette.

3 Revocation of this notice

This notice is revoked on 22 December 2020.

4 Mātaitai reserve

This notice applies to the mātaitai reserve at Port Levy (Potiriwi)/Koukourarata, on Banks Peninsula, that was declared by the Fisheries (Declaration of Mātaitai Reserve) Notice 2000 (Gazette 2000, p 4350).

5 Reappointment

(1)

The Minister for Primary Industries has appointed Meri Crofts for a further term of 5 years as a Tangata Tiaki/Kaitiaki for the mātaitai reserve.

(2)

The appointment—

(a)

took effect on 22 December 2015; and

(b)

expires at the end of 21 December 2020.

Explanatory note

This note is not part of the notice, but is intended to indicate its general effect.

This notice is made under the Fisheries (South Island Customary Fishing) Regulations 1999 (the regulations). It comes into force on the day after the date of its notification in the Gazette and revokes itself on 22 December 2020.

This notice relates to the mātaitai reserve at Port Levy (Potiriwi)/Koukourarata on Banks Peninsula. The tangata whenua of the area that includes the mātaitai reserve are represented by Te Rūnanga o Koukourārata.

Notice is given of 1 reappointment, for an appointment that expired at the end of 21 December 2015.

The Minister for Primary Industries made the reappointment under regulation 22(3) of the regulations. The Minister did so at the request of Te Rūnanga o Koukourārata.

The Tāngata Tiaki/Kaitiaki for a mātaitai reserve may—

  • ask the Minister to recommend the making of regulations to allow commercial fishing of certain species within the mātaitai reserve:

  • make bylaws restricting or prohibiting the taking of fish, aquatic life, or seaweed from within the mātaitai reserve:

  • authorise the continued taking of fish, aquatic life, or seaweed from within the mātaitai reserve for purposes that sustain the functions of a marae:

  • authorise the relocation of fish, aquatic life, or seaweed within the mātaitai reserve for the purpose of enhancing stocks.
