Fisheries (Notification of Tāngata Kaitiaki/Tiaki for Area/Rohe Moana of Hokotehi Moriori Trust) Notice 2016

Pursuant to regulation 9 of the Fisheries (Kaimoana Customary Fishing) Regulations 1998, the Minister for Primary Industries gives the following notice.

Notice

1 Title

This notice is the Fisheries (Notification of Tāngata Kaitiaki/Tiaki for Area/Rohe Moana of Hokotehi Moriori Trust) Notice 2016.

2 Commencement

This notice comes into force on the day after the date of its notification in the Gazette.

3 Interpretation

In this notice, Tchakat Kitaki has the same meaning as Tāngata Kaitiaki/Tiaki in regulation 2(1) of the Fisheries (Kaimoana Customary Fishing) Regulations 1998.

4 Customary food gathering area/rohe moana

This notice applies to the customary food gathering area/rohe moana defined by clause 2(d) of the Fisheries (Kaimoana Customary Fishing) Notice (No. 1) 2010 (Gazette 2010, p 61), which is all the fisheries waters (including inland waters) enclosed by a line with each point being 200 nautical miles from the mean high-water mark of all islands in the Chatham Islands Group.

5 Tangata whenua

The tangata whenua of the area/rohe moana are Moriori and Ngāti Mutunga.

6 New appointments

Explanatory note

This note is not part of the notice, but is intended to indicate its general effect.

This notice is made under the Fisheries (Kaimoana Customary Fishing) Regulations 1998 (the regulations). It comes into force on the day after its notification in the Gazette.

The notice relates to a customary food gathering area/rohe moana of the tangata whenua represented by the Hokotehi Moriori Trust. The area/rohe moana is all the fisheries waters (including inland waters) enclosed by a line with each point being 200 nautical miles from the mean high-water mark of all islands in the Chatham Islands Group.

Notice is given of the appointment of 4 additional Tchakat Kitaki (Moriori dialect for Tāngata Kaitiaki/Tiaki) for the area/rohe moana. The Minister for Primary Industries made the appointments on 30 September 2016 at the request of the Hokotehi Moriori Trust.

The powers of Tāngata Kaitiaki/Tiaki are set out in the regulations.
