Fisheries (Notification of Lyttelton Harbour/Whakaraupō Mātaitai Reserve and Tāngata Tiaki/Kaitiaki) Notice 2017

Pursuant to regulation 22 of the Fisheries (South Island Customary Fishing) Regulations 1999, the Director-General of the Ministry for Primary Industries gives the following notice.

Notice

1 Title

This notice is the Fisheries (Notification of Lyttelton Harbour/Whakaraupō Mātaitai Reserve and Tāngata Tiaki/Kaitiaki) Notice 2017.

2 Commencement

This notice comes into force on the 28th day after the date of its notification in the Gazette.

3 Notification of mātaitai reserve

(1)

This notice applies to Lyttelton Harbour/Whakaraupō Mātaitai Reserve, in the inner part of Lyttelton Harbour/Whakaraupō, that is declared by the Fisheries (Declaration of Lyttelton Harbour/Whakaraupō Mātaitai Reserve) Notice 2017.

(2)

The declaration of the mātaitai reserve takes effect on the commencement of this notice.

4 Appointments

(1)

The Minister for Primary Industries has appointed the following people as Tāngata Tiaki/Kaitiaki for the mātaitai reserve:

(a)

Henry Couch:

(b)

Tutehounuku Korako:

(c)

Manaia Rehu:

(d)

Matea Gillies.

(2)

The appointments—

(a)

take effect on the commencement of this notice; and

(b)

expire 5 years after the commencement of this notice.

Explanatory note

This note is not part of the notice, but is intended to indicate its general effect.

This notice is made under the Fisheries (South Island Customary Fishing) Regulations 1999 (the regulations). It comes into force on the 28th day after the date of its notification in the Gazette.

The notice relates to Lyttelton Harbour/Whakaraupō Mātaitai Reserve, which is in the inner part of Lyttelton Harbour/Whakaraupō. The tangata whenua of the area that includes the mātaitai reserve are represented by Te Hapū o Ngāti Wheke (Rāpaki) Rūnanga.

Notice is given of the declaration of the mātaitai reserve and the appointment of 4 Tāngata Tiaki/Kaitiaki for the mātaitai reserve. The Minister for Primary Industries made the appointments at the request of Te Hapū o Ngāti Wheke (Rāpaki) Rūnanga.

The powers of Tāngata Tiaki/Kaitiaki are set out in the regulations.
