Fisheries (Notification of Kahutara Mātaitai Reserve and Tāngata Tiaki/Kaitiaki) Notice 2018

Pursuant to regulation 22 of the Fisheries (South Island Customary Fishing) Regulations 1999, the Director-General of the Ministry for Primary Industries gives the following notice.

Notice

1 Title

This notice is the Fisheries (Notification of Kahutara Mātaitai Reserve and Tāngata Tiaki/Kaitiaki) Notice 2018.

2 Commencement

This notice comes into force on the 28th day after the date of its notification in the Gazette.

3 Notification of mātaitai reserve

(1)

This notice applies to Kahutara Mātaitai Reserve, over the lower reaches of the Kahutara River, south of Kaikoura, that is declared by the Fisheries (Declaration of Kahutara Mātaitai Reserve) Notice 2018.

(2)

The declaration of the mātaitai reserve takes effect on the commencement of this notice.

4 Appointments

The Minister of Fisheries has appointed the following people as Tāngata Tiaki/Kaitiaki for the mātaitai reserve:

Explanatory note

This note is not part of the notice, but is intended to indicate its general effect.

This notice is given under the Fisheries (South Island Customary Fishing) Regulations 1999 (the regulations). It comes into force on the 28th day after the date of its notification in the Gazette.

The notice relates to Kahutara Mātaitai Reserve, which is over the lower reaches of the Kahutara River, south of Kaikoura. The tangata whenua of the area that includes the mātaitai reserve are represented by Te Rūnanga o Kaikōura.

Notice is given of the declaration of the mātaitai reserve and the appointment of 9 Tāngata Tiaki/Kaitiaki for the mātaitai reserve. The Minister of Fisheries made the appointments at the request of Te Rūnanga o Kaikōura.

The powers of Tāngata Tiaki/Kaitiaki are set out in the regulations.
