Fisheries (Notification of Tāngata Tiaki/Kaitiaki for Waikawa Harbour/Tumu Toka Mātaitai Reserve) Notice 2019

Pursuant to regulation 22 of the Fisheries (South Island Customary Fishing) Regulations 1999, the Director-General of the Ministry for Primary Industries gives the following notice.

Notice

1 Title

This notice is the Fisheries (Notification of Tāngata Tiaki/Kaitiaki for Waikawa Harbour/Tumu Toka Mātaitai Reserve) Notice 2019.

2 Commencement

This notice comes into force on the day after the date of its notification in the Gazette.

3 Revocation of this notice

This notice is revoked at the end of 8 October 2023.

4 Mātaitai reserve

This notice applies to the Waikawa Harbour/Tumu Toka Mātaitai Reserve, which is within Waikawa Harbour, Porpoise Bay, Curio Bay, and the lower section of the Waikawa River (The Catlins) of South Otago, that was declared by the Fisheries (Declaration of Mataitai Reserve at Waikawa Harbour/Tumu Toka and Appointment of Tangata Tiaki/Kaitiaki) Notice 2008 (No. F458) (Gazette 2008, p 3758).

5 Reappointments

The Minister of Fisheries has appointed the following people for a further term as Tāngata Tiaki/Kaitiaki for the mātaitai reserve:

Gail Thompson.

(2)

The appointments—

(a)

took effect on 9 October 2018; and

(b)

expire at the end of 8 October 2023.

Explanatory note

This note is not part of the notice, but is intended to indicate its general effect.

This notice is made under the Fisheries (South Island Customary Fishing) Regulations 1999 (the regulations). It comes into force on the day after the date of its notification in the Gazette and revokes itself at the end of 8 October 2023.

The notice relates to the Waikawa Harbour/Tumu Toka Mātaitai Reserve, which is within Waikawa Harbour, Porpoise Bay, Curio Bay, and the lower section of the Waikawa River (The Catlins) of South Otago. The tāngata whenua of the area that includes the mātaitai reserve are represented by Te Rūnaka o Awarua.

Notice is given of the reappointment of 3 Tāngata Tiaki/Kaitiaki for the mātaitai reserve. The Minister of Fisheries made the reappointments at the request of Te Rūnaka o Awarua.

The powers of Tāngata Tiaki/Kaitiaki are set out in the regulations.
