Fisheries (Notification of Tāngata Tiaki/Kaitiaki for Ōkārito Lagoon Mātaitai Reserve) Notice 2019

Pursuant to regulations 22 and 23 of the Fisheries (South Island Customary Fishing) Regulations 1999, the Minister of Fisheries gives the following notice.

Notice

1 Title

This notice is the Fisheries (Notification of Tāngata Tiaki/Kaitiaki for Ōkārito Lagoon Mātaitai Reserve) Notice 2019.

2 Commencement

This notice comes into force on 15 August 2019.

3 Revocation of this notice

This notice is revoked at the end of 16 December 2023.

4 Mātaitai reserve

This notice applies to the Ōkārito Lagoon Mātaitai Reserve, on the west coast of the South Island, which was declared by the Fisheries (Declaration and Notification of Ōkārito Lagoon Mātaitai Reserve and Appointment of Tangata Tiaki/Kaitiaki) Notice 2012 (Gazette 2012, p 2739).

5 Appointment cancelled

(1)

The Minister of Fisheries has cancelled the appointment of Rihari Wallace as a Tangata Tiaki/Kaitiaki for the mātaitai reserve.

(2)

The cancellation took effect at the end of 16 December 2018.

6 New appointment

(1)

The Minister of Fisheries has appointed William Wilson as a Tangata Tiaki/Kaitiaki for the mātaitai reserve.

(2)

The appointment—

(a)

took effect on 17 December 2018; and

(b)

expires at the end of 16 December 2023.

7 Reappointments

(1)

The Minister of Fisheries has appointed the following people for a further term as Tāngata Tiaki/Kaitiaki for the mātaitai reserve:

Helen Rasmussen:

(c)

Paul Wilson:

(d)

Robert Wilson.

(2)

The appointments—

(a)

took effect on 13 September 2018; and

(b)

expire at the end of 12 September 2023.

Explanatory note

This note is not part of the notice, but is intended to indicate its general effect.

This notice is made under the Fisheries (South Island Customary Fishing) Regulations 1999 (the regulations). It comes into force on 15 August 2019 and revokes itself at the end of 16 December 2023.

The notice relates to the Ōkārito Lagoon Mātaitai Reserve, which is on the west coast of the South Island. The tangata whenua of the area that includes the mātaitai reserve are represented by Te Rūnaka o Makaawhio.

Notice is given of the—

  • cancellation of the appointment of 1 Tangata Tiaki/Kaitiaki for the mātaitai reserve; and

  • appointment of 5 Tāngata Tiaki/Kaitiaki for the mātaitai reserve, of which 4 are reappointments and 1 is a replacement.

The Minister of Fisheries made the reappointments at the request of Te Rūnaka o Makaawhio.

The powers of Tāngata Tiaki/Kaitiaki are set out in the regulations.
