Governor-General Bill

Proposed amendment

Keith Locke, in Committee, to move the following amendment:

Part 1 heading

Insert “appointment, term of appointment,” after “Provisions relating to” (line 2 on page 3).

New clause 4A

Insert the following clause after clause 4 (after line 28 on page 3):

4A Appointment of Governor-General
  • The Governor-General is appointed by the Sovereign on the recommendation of the House of Representatives. The recommendation must be agreed to by at least 75% of all members of Parliament.

New clause 5A

Insert the following clause after clause 5 (after line 15 on page 4):

5A Term of appointment of Governor-General
  • (1) The Governor-General is to be appointed for a term not exceeding 5 years.

    (2) A person who has been appointed as Governor-General cannot be reappointed as Governor-General.

Explanatory note

This Supplementary Order Paper amends the Governor-General Bill. The purpose of the amendment is to modernise and streamline the appointment process for the Governor-General
