Grant Robertson, in Committee, to move the following amendment:
To add the following new section 229CB (after line 8 on page 5):
“229CB Payment of fees
A student may use any component of the student loan to pay any non-compulsory students association fees collected on behalf of the association by the institution's council.”
This Supplementary Order Paper amends the Education (Freedom of Association) Amendment Bill. As currently drafted, the bill does not allow students to use any component of the student loan to pay their students association fees. This is an oversight as current Cabinet decisions restrict the use of the compulsory fee component for paying students association membership fees if this bill is passed. That would have a negative impact on students as the only other student loan component available to pay such fees is the course related costs component which has a limit of just $1,000 to cover all associated course and study costs for an entire year.
