Alcohol Reform Bill

Proposed amendments

Tim Macindoe, in Committee, to move the following amendments:

Heading to Part 2:

To omit Ages and substitute Age (line 2 on page 34).

Clause 10:

To omit 18 and substitute 20 (line 23 on page 34).

To add the following subclause (after line 23 on page 34):

  • (2) Subsection (1) does not apply to the supply of liquor on licensed premises to a person who is under the age of 20 years if—

    • (a) the person is accompanied by the person's parent, guardian, spouse or civil union partner; and

    • (b) the liquor is supplied to the person by the person's parent, guardian, spouse, or civil union partner, provided that the parent, guardian, spouse, or civil union partner is the age of 20 years or over.

Explanatory note

This Supplementary Order Paper amends the Alcohol Reform Bill to omit the split age purchase option and restore the position that existed before the law changed in 1999, whereby all liquor sales were restricted to people 20 years of age or over. The one exception to this is where someone under 20 years of age is accompanied by a parent, guardian, spouse, or civil union partner who is at least 20 years of age.
