Animal Welfare Amendment Bill

Proposed amendments

Hon Trevor Mallard, in Committee, to move the following amendments:

New clause 31A

After clause 31 (after line 20 on page 14), insert:

31A Section 81 amended (Effect of this Part)
  • After section 81(2), insert:

    • (3) Notwithstanding anything in the Psychoactive Substances Act 2013, no animal shall be used in research or testing for the purpose of gaining aproval for any psychoactive substance as defined in section 9 of the Psychoactive Substances Act 2013.

Explanatory note

This Supplementary Order Paper amends the Animal Welfare Bill to prohibit the use of animals in researching or testing any substance to which the Psychoactive Substances Act 2013 applies. Where a product cannot be approved without the use of animal testing, that product should not be approved for sale and human consumption.
