An Act to further enable the Governors of the Gisborne High School to grant Scholarships, and to remove Doubts as to the Power heretofore conferred upon the Governors for the Grant of Scholarships.
BE IT ENACTED by the General Assembly of New Zealand in Parliament assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:—
1 Short Title.
The Short Title of this Act is “The Gisborne High School Act 1885 Amendment Act, 1904.”
2 Repeal.
Section three of “The Gisborne High School Act Amendment Act, 1893,”
is hereby repealed.
3 Power to grant scholarships, exhibitions, or bursaries.
Notwithstanding anything contained in “The Gisborne High School Act, 1885,”
or any amendment thereof, it shall be lawful for the Governors of the Gisborne High School to appropriate and expend in every year such portion of its annual rents, income, or accrued revenues as they shall see fit for the grant of scholarships, exhibitions, or bursaries for proficiency in secondary subjects to pupils who have been or are being educated at any public primary or secondary school established under “The Education Act, 1877,”
or “The Secondary Schools Act, 1903,”
in the Borough of Gisborne or in the Counties of Cook and Waiapu, which borough and counties shall, subject to the Board’s power to extend, restrict, alter, or vary such special district, constitute “the special district”
within the meaning of “The Gisborne High School Act 1885 Amendment Act, 1893.”
4 Scholarships, &c., may be held at any college affiliated to the University of New Zealand, or at any high school or district high school.
Subject to such regulations and conditions as may from time to time be prescribed, any scholarships, exhibitions, or bursaries from time to time granted may be held by those pupils to whom they are so granted at any college affiliated to the New Zealand University, or at any high school or district high school.
5 Interpretation.
In this Act,—
“Secondary subjects” shall include all the branches of a liberal education, and the ordinary branches of education prescribed by “The Education Act, 1877.”
