An Act to empower the Auckland City Council to add party affiliations to voting papers at local elections for the Mayor and Councillors of the City of Auckland

BE IT ENACTED by the General Assembly of New Zealand in Parliament assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:

1 Short Title

This Act may be cited as the Auckland City Council (Local Elections) Empowering Act 1974.

2 Act to apply to local elections for Mayor and Councillors of the City of Auckland

Notwithstanding anything to the contrary in the Local Elections and Polls Act 1966, the following provisions shall apply to voting papers to be used at the general election of candidates for the offices of Mayor and Councillors of the City of Auckland to be held on the 12th day of October 1974.

3 Voting papers to show party affiliations

(1)

The voting papers to be used at that election shall show opposite the name of each candidate thereon his party affiliation as it appears on the list provided for by subsections (2) and (3) of section 25 of the Local Elections and Polls Act 1966, or such abbreviation thereof as may be determined by the Returning Officer after consultation with the candidate, and that information shall be shown on the voting papers in the same manner as is shown on the form in the Schedule to this Act.

(2)

The same information shall be shown in the same manner on special voting papers.

4 Irregularities

Section 89 of the Local Elections and Polls Act 1966 shall apply in respect of the form in the Schedule to this Act as if that form were a form in the First Schedule to the Local Elections and Polls Act 1966.

(Read carefully before voting)

1.

Write “X” in the squares immediately after the names of the candidate (s) for whom you wish to vote.

2.

You must not vote for more than [Insert number] candidate(s).

3.

After voting fold the voting paper so that its contents cannot be seen and place it in the ballot box.

4.

If you spoil this voting paper, you may return it to the officer who issued it and apply for a fresh one.

5.

This voting paper must not be taken out of the polling booth.
