An Act to enable the Committees of both Houses of the General Assembly to administer Oaths to Witnesses in certain cases.

Preamble.

WHEREAS it is expedient that Committees of the Legislative Council and House of Representatives to whom Private Bills may he referred should be enabled to administer Oaths to Witnesses examined before them:

Be it therefore enacted by the General Assembly of New Zealand, in Parliament assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:—

I Short Title.

The Short Title of this Act shall be “The Private Bills Evidence Act, 1860.”

II Select Committees of Houses may examine witnesses on Oath and administer the same.

Any Select Committee of the Legislative Council or of the House of Representatives or a Joint Committee of the Legislative Council and House of Representatives to which any Private Bill may be referred by the Legislative Council or House of Representatives respectively, may examine Witnesses upon Oath upon matters relating to such Bill, and for that purpose may administer an Oath to any such Witness.

III False evidence perjury.

Any person examined as aforesaid who shall wilfully give false evidence shall be liable to the penalties of perjury.
