An Act to amend “The Native Land Act, 1873.”
BE IT ENACTED by the General Assembly of New Zealand in Parliament assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:—
1 Short Title.
The Short Title of this Act shall be “The Native Land Act 1873 Amendment Act, 1878,”
and it shall be read and deemed to be incorporated with the aforesaid Act.
2 Court may summon witnesses and compel attendance.
The Native Land Court or any Judge thereof shall have, and shall be deemed to have had from the date of the passing of the aforesaid Act, the same power of summoning and compelling the attendance of witnesses and the production of documents, and of punishing persons who may hereafter be duly summoned for non-attendance, or for refusing to give evidence or produce documents, and the same means of enforcing the observance of its orders and rules, as is or may be possessed by the Supreme Court or any Judge thereof.
3 Counsel to either side may be allowed.
Notwithstanding anything contained in “The Native Land Act, 1873,”
the Native Land Court, or the presiding Judge at any sitting thereof, may from time to time allow counsel or agent to appear for either party in a case, and to conduct such case on behalf of such party.
