An Act to further enable Affirmations to be taken in lieu of Oaths.
Preamble.
WHEREAS cases exist in New Zealand where persons are required to take and subscribe an oath: And whereas it is expedient to extend the admission of affirmations to all such cases:
Be it therefore enacted by the General Assembly of New Zealand in Parliament assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:—
1 Short Title.
The Short Title of this Act is “The Affirmations in lien of Oaths Extension Act, 1884.”
2 Affirmation in lieu of oath in all cases.
In all cases where any person is now or may hereafter be required to take an oath, but who shall object so to do, it shall be lawful for every such person, and he shall be required, to make an affirmation in the words following, that is to say,—
“I do truly affirm and declare that.”

which affirmation or declaration shall be of the same force and effect as if such person had taken the said oath. And every person required, authorized, or qualified by any Act or law in force in New Zealand or otherwise to take or administer such an oath shall permit and accept in lieu thereof the affirmation or declaration aforesaid.
3 Penalties, &c., in respect of oaths to apply to affirmations.
The same penalties, forfeitures, and disabilities which are now in force and are attached respectively to the neglect, refusal, and false or corrupt taking or subscribing the oath aforesaid shall apply and attach in like manner in respect of the neglect, refusal, and false or corrupt making or subscribing of the said affirmation or declaration.
