An Act to modify the Provisions of the Military Service Act, 1916, relating to the Selection of Men for Service with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force.
BE IT ENACTED by the General Assembly of New Zealand in Parliament assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:—
1 Short Title.
This Act may be cited as the Military Service Amendment Act, 1917, and shall be read together with and deemed part of the Military Service Act, 1916 (hereinafter referred to as the principal Act).
2 Selection by lot of men to be called up for service to be dispensed with if all the men available for service in any division or class of the Reserve are required.
(1.)
If at any time the Government Statistician certifies to the Minister of Defence that the number of men whose names then appear in the register of any division or class of the Expeditionary Force Reserve is not more than the number of men specified in any warrant relating to that division or class, issued by the Minister of Defence under section eight of the principal Act, and not returned, all the men whose names so appear in the register of that division or class shall thereupon be deemed to have been duly selected for service under the principal Act; and the provisions of that Act shall thereupon apply to those men as if they had been selected by lot under section nine thereof.
(2.)
A list of the names of the men deemed to have been selected for service as aforesaid (together with their abodes and occupations, so far as known), certified as correct by the Government Statistician and by a Stipendiary Magistrate, shall be forthwith furnished to the Minister of Defence.
(3.)
The provisions of this section shall apply to the men for the time being enrolled on any district register in the same manner as they apply to the men enrolled on the register of an entire division or class of the Reserve.
