An Act to amend the Births and Deaths Registration Act 1951.
BE IT ENACTED by the General Assembly of New Zealand in Parliament assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:
1 Short Title.

This Act may be cited as the Births and Deaths Registration Amendment Act 1955, and shall be read together with and deemed part of the Births and Deaths Registration Act 1951 (hereinafter referred to as the principal Act).
2 Altering register after registration of birth of illegitimate child.
(1)
Section eighteen of the principal Act is hereby amended by inserting in subsection two, after the words “joint request”
, the words “made at the time of registration”
.
(2)
Section eighteen of the principal Act is hereby further amended by adding the following subsection:
“(3)
If at any time after the registration of the birth of an illegitimate child the Registrar-General is satisfied by statutory declaration or such other evidence as he may deem sufficient that both the mother and the person acknowledging himself to be the father require the name of or any other particulars relating to the father to be entered in the register, the Registrar-General may authorize the entry in the register of the particulars required to be entered as aforesaid:
“Provided that in any such case it shall not be necessary for the person acknowledging himself to be the father to sign the register:
“Provided also that if the mother is dead or cannot be found it shall be sufficient if the request is made by the father alone.”
3 As to notification of death by Coroner.
Section thirty-one of the principal Act is hereby amended by omitting the words “on the body of any deceased person”
, and substituting the words “in respect of the death of any person”
.
4 Registration of deaths occurring outside New Zealand on New Zealand ship or aircraft.

(1)
The principal Act is hereby amended by inserting, after section thirty-three, the following section:
“33a
“(1)
Where the death of any person occurs outside New Zealand and the death took place—
“(a)
On board a New Zealand ship within the meaning of the Shipping and Seamen Act 1952; or

“(b)
On board an aircraft registered in New Zealand pursuant to the Civil Aviation Act 1948 or as the result of any occurrence on board any such aircraft during its operation—
the Registrar-General may authorize any Registrar to register the death.
“(2)
The Registrar shall register the death in accordance with the provisions of this Act relating to the registration of deaths taking place in New Zealand so far as those provisions may be complied with in the circumstances:
“Provided that it shall not be necessary for any person to sign the register as informant.”

(2)
Section five hundred and six of the Shipping and Seamen Act 1952 is hereby amended by omitting from subsection five the words “the Registrar of Births and Deaths at the port at which the ship is registered or to which she belongs”
, and substituting the words “the Registrar-General of Births and Deaths”

5 Shortened form of death certificates.

(1)
Section thirty-nine a of the principal Act, as inserted by section three of the Births and Deaths Registration Amendment Act 1953, is hereby amended by inserting in subsection one, after the words “of a birth”
, the words “or of a death”
.
(2)
This section shall come into force on the first day of April, nineteen hundred and fifty-six.
