An Act to amend the Health Act 1956

BE IT ENACTED by the General Assembly of New Zealand in Parliament assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:

1 Short Title

This Act may be cited as the Health Amendment Act 1962, and shall be read together with and deemed part of the Health Act 1956 (hereinafter referred to as the principal Act).

2 Notice of cases of notifiable disease

(1)

Section 74 of the principal Act is hereby amended by omitting from paragraph (a) of subsection (1) the words “to the local authority of the district and to the Medical Officer of Health”, and substituting the words “to the Medical Officer of Health, and, except where the disease is specified in Section B of Part I of the First Schedule to this Act, to the local authority of the district”.

(2)

The principal Act is hereby further amended by repealing the First Schedule, and substituting the First Schedule set out in the Schedule to this Act.

(3)

The Infectious Diseases Order 1958 and the Infectious Diseases Order 1959 are hereby consequentially revoked.

3 Restrictions applying while ship liable to quarantine

Section 99 of the principal Act is hereby amended by adding to paragraph (b) of subsection (1) the words “or an Inspector appointed under section 6 of the Department of Agriculture Act 1953”.

PART I— NOTIFIABLE INFECTIOUS DISEASES

Section A — Infectious Diseases Notifiable to Medical Officer of Health and Local Authority

Anthrax.	Pneumonic influenza.
Cerebro-spinal fever (cerebro-spinal meningitis).	Poliomyelitis.
	Relapsing fever.
Cholera.	Salmonella infections.
Cysticercosis.	Septicaemic influenza.
Diphtheria.	Smallpox (variola, including varioloid and alastrim).
Dysentery (amoebic and bacillary).
Encephalitis lethargica.	Taeniasis.
Enteric fever (typhoid fever, paratyphoid fever).	Trachoma (granular conjunctivitis, granular ophthalmia, granular eyelids).

Fulminant influenza.
Infective hepatitis.	Typhus.
Leptospiral infections.	Undulant fever.
Ornithosis (psittacosis).	Yellow fever.
Plague (bubonic or pneumonic).

Section B — Infectious Diseases Notifiable to Medical Officer of Health

Leprosy.	Puerperal infection involving any form of sepsis, either generalised or local, in or arising from the female genital tract within 14 days of childbirth or abortion.
Ophthalmia neonatorum.
Pemphigus neonatorum, impetigo, or pustular lesions of the skin of the newborn infant.	Staphylococcal pneumonia or septicaemia of the newborn infant.

PART II— OTHER INFECTIOUS DISEASES

Chickenpox (varicella).	Pediculosis.
Erysipelas.	Pneumonia (acute primary).
Gonorrhoea.	Ringworm of the scalp (tinea tonsurans).
Impetigo contagiosa.
Influenza.	Scabies (itch).
Measles (morbilli), and German measles (rubella).	Streptococcal sore throat, including scarlet fever.
Mumps (epidemic parotitis).	Syphilis, and soft chancre.
	Whooping cough (pertussis).”

This Act is administered in the Department of Health.
