An Act to amend the Nurses and Midwives Act 1945

BE IT ENACTED by the General Assembly of New Zealand in Parliament assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:

1 Short Title

This Act may be cited as the Nurses and Midwives Amendment Act 1962, and shall be read together with and deemed part of the Nurses and Midwives Act 1945 (hereinafter referred to as the principal Act).

2 Nurses and Midwives Board

(1)

Section 4 of the principal Act is hereby amended by inserting in subsection (2), after paragraph (d), the following paragraph:

“(dd)

A registered medical practitioner, to be nominated by the Medical Superintendents’ Association of New Zealand Incorporated and to be appointed on the recommendation of the Minister:”.

(2)

The principal Act is hereby further amended—

(a)

By omitting from paragraph (f) of subsection (2) of section 4 the words “Two registered nurses”, and substituting the words “Three registered nurses”:

(b)

By omitting from subsection (2) of section 6 the words “five members”, and substituting the words “six members”.

3 Practising certificates of Government nurses

(1)

Section 28 of the principal Act (as amended by section 12 of the Nurses and Midwives Amendment Act 1960) is hereby further amended by adding the following subsection:

“(6)

Nothing in this section shall require any person who is for the time being employed in any Department of the Public Service to be the holder of an annual practising certificate, but any such person who is qualified to receive that certificate may apply for and obtain the same.”

(2)

Section 12 of the Nurses and Midwives Amendment Act 1960 is hereby repealed.
