An Act to amend the Nurses and Midwives Act 1945
BE IT ENACTED by the General Assembly of New Zealand in Parliament assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:
1 Short Title
This Act may be cited as the Nurses and Midwives Amendment Act 1967, and shall be read together with and deemed part of the Nurses and Midwives Act 1945 (hereinafter referred to as the principal Act).
2 Interpretation and certificates of registration
(1)
Section 2 of the principal Act is hereby amended by adding as subsection (2) the following subsection:
“(2)
Every reference in any other Act to a registered nurse, a registered midwife, a registered maternity nurse, a registered male nurse, a registered psychiatric nurse, a registered psychopaedic nurse, a registered nursing aid, or a registered community nurse shall, unless the context otherwise requires, be read as a reference to a registered nurse, a registered midwife, a registered maternity nurse, a registered male nurse, a registered psychiatric nurse, a registered psychopaedic nurse, a registered nursing aid, or, as the case may be, a registered community nurse within the meaning of this Act.”
(2)
Section 18 of the principal Act is hereby amended by omitting from subsection (1) the words “under the hand”
, and substituting the words “issued by or under the authority”
.
3 Registration of community nurses
(1)
Section 2 of the principal Act (as amended by section 2 of the Nurses and Midwives Amendment Act 1965) is hereby further amended by omitting from the definition of the term “community nurse”
the word “woman”
, and substituting the word “person”
.
(2)
Section 15a of the principal Act (as inserted by section 4 of the Nurses and Midwives Amendment Act 1965) is hereby amended:
(a)
By omitting the word “woman”
, and substituting the word “person”
:
(b)
by omitting from paragraphs (a) and (b) the word “she”
wherever it appears, and substituting in each case the word “he”
.
(3)
The said section 15a is hereby further amended by adding the following paragraph:
“(c)
In the case of a female applicant who is registered as a nursing aid under section 15 of this Act, that she holds in that capacity an annual practising certificate issued under section 28 of this Act or is otherwise sufficiently competent to be registered as a community nurse”.
(4)
The said section 15a is hereby further amended by adding as subsection (2) the following subsection:
“(2)
For the purpose of enabling persons to become registered community nurses in different fields of nursing, such separate or alternative courses of instruction and training as are from time to time required may be prescribed in respect of—
“(a)
Men or women seeking to be registered as aforesaid; or
“(b)
Any particular school or class of school for the training of community nurses.”
This Act is administered in the Department of Health.
