An Act to amend the Universities Act 1961

BE IT ENACTED by the General Assembly of New Zealand in Parliament assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:

1 Short Title

This Act may be cited as the Universities Amendment Act 1971, and shall be read together with and deemed part of the Universities Act 1961 (hereinafter referred to as the principal Act).

2 Passing of resolutions of the Curriculum Committee without a meeting

Section 29 of the principal Act is hereby amended by repealing subsection (4), and substituting the following subsection:

“(4)

Every resolution of the Curriculum Committee made without a meeting of the Committee shall as soon as practicable be notified by the Chairman of the Committee to each member of the Committee.”

3 Course regulations and academic developments

(1)

Section 31 of the principal Act is hereby amended by repealing subsections (1) and (2), and substituting the following subsections:

“(1)

The Council of each University shall submit to the Curriculum Committee for approval any proposed course regulations relating to—

“(a)

The introduction of a new subject (being a subject that is not for the time being prescribed as a subject of study in the University for a degree or other academic qualification); or

“(b)

The introduction of a course of study for a new degree or other academic qualification (being a degree or other academic qualification that the University is not for the time being authorised to confer or award); or

“(c)

Any prerequisite to a course of study for any degree or other academic qualification; or

“(d)

Such other matters as the Curriculum Committee may from time to time decide.

“(2)

Any course regulations submitted for approval shall be accompanied by such explanation as the Curriculum Committee may require. If the course regulations relate to the introduction of a new subject, they shall in any case be accompanied by a description of the nature and scope of the subject.”

(2)

The said section 31 (as amended by section 5 of the Universities Amendment Act 1966) is hereby further amended by repealing subsection (7), and substituting the following subsection:

“(7)

Course regulations shall not come into force until they have been published in the Calendar of the University concerned, unless they require the approval of the Curriculum Committee in which case they shall not come into force until approved by the Committee and published in the Calendar of (the University concerned:

“Provided that in any special circumstances or in order to avoid hardship to any student the course regulations so published may be made to come into force on such a date before the date erf their publication as shall be specified in a resolution of the Council of the University or, in the case of any course regulations requiring the approval of the Curriculum Committee, in a resolution of the Committee.”

(3)

Section 5 of the Universities Amendment Act 1966 is hereby consequentially repealed.
