An Act to amend the Weights and Measures Act 1925

BE IT ENACTED by the General Assembly of New Zealand in Parliament assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:

1 Short Title

This Act may be cited as the Weights and Measures Amendment Act 1972, and shall be read together with and deemed part of the Weights and Measures Act 1925 (hereinafter referred to as the principal Act).

2 Metric standards

(1)

The principal Act is hereby amended by repealing section 7 (as amended by section 6 of the Scientific and Industrial Research Amendment Act 1945), and substituting the following section:

“7

The Minister shall from time to time procure from the Minister of Science verified copies of the New Zealand standards for the metre and the kilogram established pursuant to the Scientific and Industrial Research Act 1952 and of metric standards derived from either of those two standards, and those copies shall be metric standards for the purposes of this Act.”

(2)

Section 10 of the principal Act is hereby amended by repealing subsection (1), and substituting the following subsection:

“(1)

The Minister shall provide or procure copies of the standard weights and measures of New Zealand and of any metric standards.”

(3)

The Scientific and Industrial Research Amendment Act 1945 is hereby consequentially amended by repealing so much of the Schedule as relates to section 7 of the principal Act.

(4)

This section shall come into force on a date to be appointed for the commencement thereof by the Governor-General by Order in Council.

3 Measurement of electricity, etc.

(1)

The principal Act is hereby amended by repealing section 31.

(2)

The Scientific and Industrial Research Amendment Act 1945 is hereby consequentially amended by repealing so much of the Schedule as relates to section 31(2) of the principal Act.

This Act is administered in the Department of Labour.
