An Act to amend the Births and Deaths Registration Act 1951

BE IT ENACTED by the Parliament of New Zealand as follows:

1 Short Title and commencement

(1)

This Act may be cited as the Births and Deaths Registration Amendment Act 1993, and shall be read together with and deemed part of the Births and Deaths Registration Act 1951 (hereinafter referred to as the principal Act).

(2)

This Act shall come into force on the 1st day of July 1993.

2 Searches of Registrar-General’s indexes

The principal Act is hereby amended by inserting, after section 39a (as inserted by section 3 of the Births and Deaths Registration Amendment Act 1953), the following section:

“39b

“(1)

The Registrar-General shall maintain indexes of documents containing information recorded under this Act or any former Act (including documents sent to the Chief Archivist).

“(2)

Upon request and payment of the prescribed fee or fees, the Registrar-General shall provide any person with a copy of all or any part of any copy prepared by or under the control of the Registrar-General of an index (other than an index relating to adoption) maintained under subsection (1) of this section or an equivalent provision of a former Act.”

3 Disclosure of information to Department of Social Welfare

Section 41a(2) of the principal Act (as inserted by section 2 of the Births and Deaths Registration Amendment Act 1991) is hereby amended by omitting the words “disclosure of information by the Registrar-General to”, and substituting the words “exchange of information between the Registrar-General and”.

4 Repeal

Section 41b of the principal Act (as so inserted) is hereby repealed.
