An Act to amend the Anzac Day Act 1966

BE IT ENACTED by the Parliament of New Zealand as follows:

1 Short Title

This Act may be cited as the Anzac Day Amendment Act 1996, and shall be read together with and deemed part of the Anzac Day Act 1966 (hereinafter referred to as the principal Act).

2 Anzac Day to be a day of commemoration

The principal Act is hereby amended by repealing section 2, and substituting the following section:

“2

“(1)

In commemoration of the part taken by New Zealand servicemen and servicewomen in—

“(a)

The First and Second World Wars; and

“(b)

The South African War; and

“(c)

The Korean War; and

“(d)

The war in Malaya/Borneo; and

“(e)

The war in South Vietnam—

and in memory of those who at any time have given their lives for New Zealand and the British Empire or Commonwealth of Nations, the 25th day of April in each year (being the anniversary of the first landing of troops from the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand on Gallipoli) shall be known as Anzac Day, and shall be a day of commemoration.

“(2)

The Governor-General may from time to time, by Order in Council, amend subsection (1) of this section by adding to the list of conflicts referred to in that subsection.

“(3)

Every Order in Council made under subsection (2) of this section shall be deemed to be a regulation for the purpose of the Regulations (Disallowance) Act 1989.”

This Act is administered in the Department of Internal Affairs.
