Part 1 Preliminary provisions

3 Purpose

The purpose of this Act is to—

(a)

provide for the replacement of the elected members of the Canterbury Regional Council with commissioners who will act as the Council’s governing body until the elected members of Environment Canterbury come into office in accordance with the Environment Canterbury (Transitional Governance Arrangements) Act 2016 following the 2016 election; and

(b)

provide the Council with certain powers that it does not otherwise have to address issues relevant to the efficient, effective, and sustainable management of fresh water in the Canterbury region.
