Electoral Amendment Bill
Proposed amendment
Brendan Horan, in Committee, to move the following amendment:
Clause 55
In clause 55(2), replace “on that date”
(line 25 on page 45) with “on the date that is 4 months after the commencement date”
.
Explanatory note
This Supplementary Order Paper amends the Electoral Amendment Bill. The Electoral Amendment Bill provides that only registered parties can have a registered logo, and immediately cancels the registered logos of unregistered parties. There are 37 of these, about half for parties that were previously registered and half that have never been registered. There is 1 logo recently registered, and 2 whose applications for party registration are being processed by the Electoral Commission.
This Supplementary Order Paper provides a short period of time, 4 months, for any applications for party registration to be lodged, processed, and determined by the Electoral Commission. After that 4 month period, all remaining logos of unregistered parties will be cancelled. This Supplementary Order Paper will not affect the conduct of the general election to be held later this year.
