Proposed amendment
Hon Chris Hipkins, in Committee, to move the following amendment:
Clause 36
After clause 36(5) (page 17, after line 14), insert:
(5A)
In section 253C(3)(d), after “appropriate”
, insert “; and”

After section 253C(3)(d), insert:
(e)
in the case of a wānanga, consult with such persons or bodies who are knowledgeable in āhuatanga Māori (Māori tradition) and tikanga Māori (Māori custom) within a kaupapa Māori pedagogy as the Minister considers appropriate.
Explanatory note
This Supplementary Order Paper proposes an amendment to clause 36 of the Education (Tertiary Education and Other Matters) Amendment Bill. The proposed amendment would add a new paragraph to section 253C(3) of the Education Act 1989, requiring the Minister, before deciding whether to grant consent under section 253C(2) for a wānanga to use a certain protected term, to consult with people or bodies who are knowledgeable in āhuatanga Māori (Māori tradition) and tikanga Māori (Māori custom) within a kaupapa Māori pedagogy.

The Ministry of Education considers that a departmental disclosure statement is not required to be prepared for this Supplementary Order Paper.
