Freedom Camping Bill
Proposed amendment
Phil Twyford, in Committee, to move the following amendment:
Clauses 35 to 39
To omit these clauses (line 23 on page 23 to line 32 on page 26).
Explanatory note
This Supplementary Order Paper amends the Freedom Camping Bill. Clauses 35 to 39 relate to the seizing and impounding of boats, caravans, motor vehicles and other property, and the return and/or disposal of that property, for offences identified within this Bill. These are draconian powers that can implement tough penalties—penalties that greatly outweigh even the worst possible offence that could be prosecuted under this proposed legislation. Negative publicity could have a serious impact on overseas visitor arrivals. These powers are also incompatible with the relationship New Zealanders have traditionally had with the outdoors.
