Game Animal Council Bill
Proposed amendment
Eugenie Sage, in Committee, to move the following amendment:
New Clause 16A
After clause 16 (after line 21 on page 13), insert:
16A Areas excluded from designation of herds of special interest
Notwithstanding section 16, aherd of special interest must not be designated over any location in a national park established under the National Parks Act 1980; or over any national reserve, nature reserve, scientific reserve, ecological area, scenic reserve, or historic reserve established under the Reserves Act 1977.
Explanatory note
This Supplementary Order Paper amends the Game Animal Council Bill. The establishment of herds of special interest and the management of problem animals such as deer and chamois for hunting purposes potentially conflicts with the protection of indigenous habitats and ecosystems on conservation land from the impacts of these introduced browsers. New clause 16A ensures that the protection of indigenous biodiversity remains the primary management purpose in our highest categories of protected area by preventing herds of special interest being established in them.
