Electoral Amendment Bill
Proposed amendment
Hon Maryan Street, in Committee, to move the following amendment:
Clause 24
In clause 24, replace new section 167(2) (lines 12 to 15 on page 27) with:
(2) An elector who applies to vote must—
(a) verbally give or verbally confirm his or her name; or
(b) present an enrolment confirmation card or such other information that is necessary to find the elector's name on the rolls.
Explanatory note
This Supplementary Order Paper amends clause 24, new section 167(2) so that a person may prove their identity through either giving verbal confirmation of their name or by the presentation of an enrolment confirmation card (an Easy vote card). The Bill currently requires both. Evidence has not been provided to show fraud is occurring which would warrant such measures. There is also a risk the measures may prove a serious impediment to voting to those who are disabled or who cannot speak English well.
