Animal Welfare Amendment Bill
Proposed amendments
Hon Trevor Mallard, in Committee, to move the following amendments:
Clause 56
In clause 56, new section 183A(4B)(b), replace “10” (page 37, line 35) with “7”.
In clause 56, new section 183A(4B)(b), delete “(which period may, however, be extended once under subsection (4C))” (page 37, lines 35 to 36).
In clause 56, delete new section 183A(4C) (page 37, line 37 to page 38, line 9).
Explanatory note
This Supplementary Order Paper amends the ability to make transitional regulations under the Act. The Bill as drafted allows regulations to be made for up to 10 years with a potential extension of another 5 years when phasing out harmful practices relating to animals. This could lead to inappropriate treatment of animals continuing for an extended period of time. This Supplementary Order Paper corrects this by reducing the initial period allowed from 10 years to 7 and removing the ability to extend this period.
