Proposed amendments
Kanwaljit Singh Bakshi, in Committee, to move the following amendments:
Clause 3
In clause 3, definition of medical practitioner, in paragraph (a) , after “profession of medicine”
(page 3, after line 23), insert “, and has been registered for a period of at least 5 years”
In clause 3, definition of medical practitioner, in paragraph (b) , after “practising certificate”
(page 3, after line 24), insert “and has held a practising certificate continuously in New Zealand for a period of at least 5 years and has never had their practising certificate cancelled”
Explanatory note
This Supplementary Order Paper amends the End of Life Choice Bill to provide a minimum level of qualification for a medical practitioner in relation to registration and length of practice of medicine. A medical practitioner who does not have at least some minimal level of experience practising medicine must be regarded as being even less safe to provide euthanasia and/or assisted suicide services than one who has a greater level of experience.
