Arms Legislation Bill
Proposed amendments
Brett Hudson, in Committee, to move the following amendments:
Clause 53
In clause 53, delete new Part 7 (page 63, line 14 to page 66, line 31).
Clause 83
In clause 83, delete the cross-heading above new section 92 and new sections 92 to 94 (page 100, line 32 to page 102, line 9).
Explanatory note
This Supplementary Order Paper amends clause 53 of the Arms Legislation Bill to delete new Part 7. National does not oppose a firearms registry on ideological grounds, but sought certainty on how the registry will operate. If the registry has a useful and practical purpose, and can actually deliver on it, we could support it; however, as the proposed registry won’t deliver the objective of the Government, we recommend removing it from this Bill. Police already require information on firearms imported into New Zealand but at the same time are unable to provide an estimate on the types of firearms being imported. This shows processes are not working.
