Proposed amendment

Hon Paul Goldsmith, in Committee, to move the following amendment:

Clause 5

In clause 5, after Examples of conversion practices (page 3, after line 37), insert:

Example of act that is not a conversion practice

A parent, or caregiver, withholding consent for medical intervention in relation to gender transition, for what they consider to be the child’s best interests.

Explanatory note

This Supplementary Order Paper seeks to amend the Conversion Practices Prohibition Legislation Bill by inserting an example of an act that is not a conversion practice. This will clarify that withholding parental consent for what could be a substantial and irreversible medical procedure, on the basis of a sincere desire to act in a child’s best interests, is not a conversion practice under this legislation.
